Neck and Face Lift

Neck and face lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure to tighten and rejuvenate the face and neck.

What is this procedure?

Facelift is a cosmetic procedure that tightens the facial soft tissue, remove and repositions the excess fat and removes the excess sagging skin from the face and neck. Facelift surgery refers to the surgery of the area from below the eyes down to the neck, therefore, reducing visible signs of ageing. Factors such as excessive sun exposure, genetics, weight fluctuations, gravity, smoking and nutrition will affect the way the facial features change over time, leading to loss of facial definition or ,in general, looking tired.

The initial or early signs of ageing begin with a descent of the cheek or malar fat pad. This leads to a loss of roundness of the cheek and a lengthened appearance of the lower eyelid. As the subcutaneous tissues and the SMAS layer (a strong ligamentous structure that supports the soft tissue of the face) stretches and weakens, the cheek descends below the jawline creating jowls. Additionally, the nasolabial (smile lines) become deeper, and the lower cheeks begin to hollow. With further descent of the jowls, marionette lines form at the corners of the mouth, giving the mouth a sad appearance.

While there is a generalised loss of fat in the face, there is an accumulation of fat below the chin in the submental area. Bands begin to form below the chin giving a 'turkey gobbler' appearance. These are caused by the separation of the platysma muscle (a wide thin layer of muscle located on each side of the neck). In slightly older patients, the neck becomes more lax, resulting in the loss of normal angle between the neck and the chin. Facelift procedure is usually performed on individuals aged between 40 to 65. However, older people could also benefit from having facelifts.
